Kernow Plastering is one of Cornwall’s leading lime plastering and lime rendering specialists. With extensive experience in traditional lime work, we restore and renovate listed buildings, traditional Cornish cottages, heritage farmhouses and historic coastal properties throughout the county.
Lime is not the same as modern cement. Used on the wrong building, modern cement
render traps moisture,accelerates decay and causes lasting structural damage. On a
solid-stone Cornish cottage, only lime will do — and lime work demands a different skill
set, different timings and a deep understanding of the material.
Why Lime Plaster Matters
Lime plaster and lime render are breathable — they allow moisture to move through the wall and evaporate naturally, which is essential for the solid stone, cob and brick walls found in most Cornish properties built before 1919.
Lime is also flexible, accommodating the small movements that older buildings naturally make, where modern cement would crack. For listed buildings, lime is almost always the only material that conservation officers will approve.

The cost of plastering in Cornwall depends on the size and condition of the room, the
type of plaster used, and the level of preparation required. As a rough guide, skimming a
standard room typically starts from around £350–£500, while full re-plastering jobs are
priced per project. We always provide a free, no-obligation fixed-price quote so you

If your property was built before about 1919, or has solid stone, brick or cob walls, you
almost certainly need lime plaster rather than cement. Lime is breathable and flexible,
which is essential for older Cornish buildings — modern cement traps moisture in solid

usually a requirement of listed building consent. We’ll always advise honestly on which

Standard gypsum skim typically dries enough to paint in 5–7 days, depending on
temperature and ventilation. Lime plaster takes much longer — a typical lime render coat
needs around one day per millimetre of thickness to cure, and full carbonation can take
weeks. We’ll always advise on drying times for your specific project so you can plan
decoration and follow-on trades.
Yes — coastal rendering is one of our most-requested services. Cornwall’s coastal
properties face salt spray, driving rain and severe weather, so getting the rendering
system right is essential. We work with silicone thin-coat systems, K-Rend, monocouche
and traditional lime renders, choosing the right specification for each property’s
exposure, substrate and age.
Sometimes — but not always. If the existing render is sound and well-bonded, we can
often prepare and re-coat it. If it’s blown, cracked or failing, the only proper solution is to
hack it off and start again. We’ll always assess honestly and won’t recommend a rerender over failing work that will only fail again.
Yes. As well as domestic plastering, we work with builders, developers and main
contractors on commercial projects, new-build housing developments, extensions,
conversions and refurbishments throughout Cornwall. We’re fully insured and
